Dear brothers and sisters,
Our First Reading (Gen 18:20-32) tells us that Abraham is so familiar with God that he will haggle with him in an attempt to save the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. In our Gospel (Lk 11:1-13) we are given a way to pray and understand our relationship with God. First the focus is on God’s ‘agenda’ (that God’s name be held holy, that God’s kingdom come, etc). Then the petitions turn to human needs (for sustenance, for forgiveness and finally for protection in the hour of trial). Following the example of Jesus, he invites us also to call God ‘Father’. After the resurrection the Spirit moved the disciples to ‘dare’ call God ‘Abba’. This expresses the intimate filial relationship with God into which Jesus draws us. Read more…
