We are now in Ordinary Time Year A, when on Sundays we read the Gospel according to Matthew. So, it is striking that today’s Gospel is from John (Jn1: 29-34).
In today’s First Reading (Is 49:3, 5-6). The ‘Servant’ describes his calling and the dual role that he has received from God. Not only is he to restore and gather the survivors from exile in Babylon but Israel is to receive a new mission as ‘the light of the nations’. Amid the bitterness and loss associated with exile there are those who have experienced God’s faithfulness and liberating power in captivity. These return with their new mission: to be the instrument of salvation for the entire world. Similarly Jesus’ mission is to be not only Messiah of Israel but also Saviour of the world. Read more…
